Bombing of Würzburg on March 16, 1945

On March 16, 1945, the bombing raid by the British Royal Air Force completely destroyed and burned down most of Würzburg's old town. Thousands of people lost their lives. The city of that time was unrecognizable within a few minutes.

This terrible night is still remembered every year on March 16. Citizens come together at various locations in the city center and commemorate while all the church bells in Würzburg ring loudly from 9.20 pm to 9.40 pm - as long as the attack on Würzburg lasted.

The aim of the documentation was to superimpose the photographs exactly on top of each other so that they could be compared in the best possible way. Drag the slider to the left and right to see the historical photo or the current photo in a direct 1:1 comparison.

The project idea and implementation were created in collaboration with the Main-Post daily newspaper - thank you for the great cooperation!

Many thanks to the providers of the historical photographs! These can be found in the respective caption.
